starke county economic development foundation to hold fourth annual prospectus and achievements

Starke County, Indiana – In celebration of Manufacturers Day and the past year’s economic development activities in Starke County, the Starke County Economic Development Foundation (SCEDF) will host its fourth annual “Prospectus and Achievements” on Thursday, October 2, 2014 at the Knox Middle School beginning at 11:10 am CDT.The public is invited to attend this event.Industry booths will be available to look at and talk with company representatives about what these companies make and where their products end up both before and after the luncheon.

Featured speaker for the event will be Gordon Schenk, one of the owners of Hoosier Custom Plastics and EcoGolf, both located in Knox.Mr. Schenk will talk about a program those two companies are involved in known as the Folds of Honor Foundation, and the moving story as to how they came to be involved with this organization, which has as its purpose providing scholarships and assistance to the spouses and children of those killed and disabled in service to America. These two Starke County industries have helped raise funds that have provided over 5,500 such scholarships in the last 7 years.

The Foundation will also honor a member of the Starke County community who has been involved in economic development work for the past several years with the Robert E. Hamilton Award, the highest honor the Foundation can bestow and named in memory of the man who has been called the founder of the Foundation.This individual will join previous award recipients, Mathew Swanson, Jack Lynch, Nancy Dembowski, and Van H. Janovic.

This luncheon will be held in between sessions of Manufacturers Day where approximately 360 7th graders from the County’s three school systems will have a chance to talk with representatives from Starke County industrial companies about what their company makes, what kinds of jobs are available, and what job skills are needed to secure a job with that company.  This event is an effort by the Foundation to help middle school students be aware of what companies manufacture, as well as let them know what jobs are available and what job skills are needed to fill those jobs in the future.
