The State of Indiana Department of Transportation has awarded a $300,000 grant to the Chesapeake and Indiana Railroad (CKIN) to help upgrade a three mile segment of track in LaPorte County, which will aid in the replacement of ties, rail, a bridge, cross-ties and adding ballast to a segment of track in Wellsboro. The grant was awarded under the Industrial Rail Service Fund, and was one of eleven railroads to receive funding under that program.

In addition, the operator of that line per agreement with the Town of North Judson, which actually owns that railroad, will contribute $300,000 so that the entire 15 miles of track used by CKIN will be federally-rated to handle Class 1 cars, which is the standard for heavy-haul rail shipping. The CKIN track runs through Union Mills, LaCrosse, Malden, North Judson, English Lake, Thomaston and Hanna to Wellsboro.  The line is mostly used for transporting grain from rural elevators to the mainline railroad systems, interchanging with Norfolk Southern at Thomaston and CSX at Wellsboro.
