National Unemployment Rate Continues to Trend Downwards

The U.S. unemployment rate for August continued to decline, falling from 10.2% in July to 8.4% in August.  An additional 1.4 million jobs were added that month, but 350,000 of those were temporary Census jobs.  A great deal of the job gains were in retail positions, with manufacturing adding 29,000, and  construction adding 16,000 jobs.

Despite these gains, only about half of the 22 million jobs that were suddenly lost have been filled, leaving about 11.5 million fewer jobs nationally than there were in February.
