Indiana County Unemployment Rates Show COVID-19 Impact
The Indiana Department of Workforce Development this morning issued its April unemployment report for Indiana Counties. While the March rates showed an increase, this is the first full month of impact on the rates since the onslaught of layoffs due to COVID-19. Starke County fared better than several others, but the rate for the county jumped from 4.7% in March to 19.9% in April. All 92 Indiana counties showed drastic increases, with even the best county having a rate of 8.4% for the month. This is the worst rate for Starke County, far eclipsing the highest rate recorded back in the aftermath of the 2008 housing collapse, where the County saw a 15.1% rate in March of 2019.
