Executive Director Featured in The Society of Innovators Initial Newsletter

Starke County Economic Development Foundation Executive Director Charles W.Weaver has been featured in the initial newsletter published by The Society of Innovators of Northwest Indiana.  Weaver was cited for his creation and deployment of a unique financial package to attract a planned SYSCO Redistribution Center to Hamlet, located in Starke County.  In addition to serving as Executive Director of the Foundation, a post he has held since August of 2005, Weaver also serves as the Chair of the Economic Development Committee of the Northwest Indiana Forum, as well as being on the Managing Board of Directors of the Forum.

INDOT Awards Contract on Koontz Lake Road and Bridge Work

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) today awarded the bid on the Koontz Lake Dam Bridge and Road Construction Project.  A total of 6 bidders submitted bids, ranging from a low bid of $4,646,759 up to a high bid of $5,878,900.  The engineering estimate for this project was $5,731,700.  The successful bidder was Northern Indiana Construction (Mishawaka, IN) on their low bid of $4,646,759

The project includes reconstruction of SR 23 in the area of the Dam, as well as construction of a new bridge spanning 136.5 LF.  The project has a completion date of May 15, 2012.

County Unemployment Rate Holds Steady in December

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development (DWD) released its preliminary unemployment figures for the month of December, 2010 yesterday.  Starke County's rate stayed the same as it was in November at 11.3%, leaving the County in a three-way tie for 5th place in the State of Indiana for the highest rate.  Despite that, however, the December rate marks the lowest December rate for the County since December of 2007, prior to the most recent recession.  During 2010, the rate improved from 12.6% in December of 2009 to the most current rate of 11.3%.  The State of Indiana rate improved to 9.5% from the November figure of 9.8%.

For the Midwest area, Indiana's rate of 9.5% was bettered only by Illinois, which came in at 9.3%.  Other States and their rates include Michigan at 11.7%, Ohio at 9.6%, and Kentucky at 10.3%.

Bids Taken on Koontz Lake Dam Project

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) took bids on Wednesday of this week on the Koontz Lake Dam Bridge and Road Construction Project.  A total of 6 bidders submitted bids, ranging from a low bid of $4,646,759 up to a high bid of $5,878,900.  The engineering estimate for this project was $5,731,700.  The bidders and their bids are as follows:

U.S. Unemployment Rate Drops in December

The U.S. Department of Labor announced this morning that 103,000 jobs were added in the month of December, and that for 2010, an additional 1.1 million jobs were added, the biggest one-year gain since 2007.  In addition, the Labor Department also announced that the U.S. Unemployment Rate had fallen to 9.4% for the month of December, down from 9.8% in November.  The 9.4% rate is the lowest that rate has been since May of 2009.

INDOT To Take Bids on Koontz Lake Project

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is scheduled to take bids on January 12, 2011 for a project at Koontz Lake.  That project will include road reconstrution of State Road 23 at the Koontz Lake Dam, as well as construction of a new bridge over the Dam spanning 136.5 LF.  That project calls for completion of the work by May 15, 2012.

Two Local Fire Departments Receive Assistance to Firefighters Grants

The Knox Center Township Fire Department and the Koontz Lake Oregon Township Fire Department have both been awarded funds under the 2010 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).  Both grants were awarded  for equipment for operations and safety.  Knox received a total of $44,650 while Koontz Lake will receive a total of $8,550 in grant funding.
